the inventors dilemma

1.) Griffith ran into many problems, one of them being that when he was making the lens printer he was trying to solve the wrong problem. His printer did win prizes but it did not make it to the market. As an industrial designer we are constantly trying to fix problems with current products. Sometimes we do not always fix the problem that consumers are looking for.

2.) Industrial designers respond to the consumers wants and needs. When we do not fix the problems they are looking for we refine and redesign our products. We keep doing this until the products meets the expectations of the consumer. Many industrial designers want to use the latest and greatest technology in their products but manufacturing products with this technology may be very costly and may change their ideas. This is another one of the problems that Griffith had.

3.) Another one of Griffiths problems was that he was unable to make his electricity wind generator full scale because of costs and for the reason that it would take years to get the product out on the market. He also created an electric rope but he said it was a technology waiting for the right application. He also had the idea of solar roadways but realized the the amount of energy to make it would not be returned.

  1. Alex brings up three great points that every work environment comes head to head with. Griffith's created many different projects that were not able to go any farther than the design stage; architects also face this dilemma when designing a new building. No matter how inventive or daring a design could be, if there is no public interested in it the whole idea is scraped and a new one is created. We have to learn where the line is crossed between too risky, and playing it too safe. Alex also brings up the fact about trying to improve products and making sure it is what the customer is interested in. In comparison, architects are currently trying to enhance the use of sustainable and green products in each building, but we have to make sure we are not designing a building that is totally different from what the owner wants. In addition, the cost is also a big dilemma we face, we have to be careful at how much green products we use because we do not want the price to increase more than if we used regular products. Architects always have to pay attention to all these different aspects when designing a building or they could lose the customer during the process. All of these issues are present in everyday life and in different ways for each major. As professionals we have to learn how to find solutions to these problems and overcome each obstacle
